River Plate’s 1999/2000 season was a mixed campaign of highs and frustration under Ramón Díaz. The team remained one of Argentina’s strongest sides, featuring stars like Aimar, Saviola, Ángel, and Placente, but couldn’t translate their attacking brilliance into sustained dominance.

In the Apertura 1999, River finished fourth, showing flashes of brilliance but inconsistency in defence. They bounced back in the Clausura 2000, finishing runners-up behind Racing Club, with Pablo Aimar and Javier Saviola excelling as one of South America’s most exciting young duos.

In the Copa Libertadores, River reached the quarterfinals but were eliminated by Boca Juniors, deepening the rivalry and marking the end of Ramón Díaz’s first era in charge.
