River Plate’s 1996/97 season was one of the most successful in the club’s illustrious history, marking the peak of Ramón Díaz’s first spell as manager.

River achieved a rare Apertura–Clausura double, winning both Argentine league titles in the same season — a feat unmatched by any other club at the time. The team featured a golden generation including Enzo Francescoli, Marcelo Gallardo, Ariel Ortega, Hernán Crespo, Marcelo Salas, and Juan Pablo Sorín, blending style, youth, and experience.

Their attacking football was dominant, with Francescoli and Salas starring as top scorers. Though they fell short in the Copa Libertadores, domestically River were untouchable, cementing their 1990s dynasty.
