River Plate’s 1995/96 season was a landmark campaign — the beginning of a new golden era under manager Ramón Díaz. The club dominated domestically and made major strides in South America.

River won the Apertura 1996 championship (the second half of the 1995/96 season), playing dynamic, attacking football led by stars such as Enzo Francescoli, Ariel Ortega, Hernán Crespo, Matías Almeyda, and Sergio Berti. Their balance of flair and discipline made them Argentina’s standout team.

In 1996, River also triumphed in the Copa Libertadores, defeating América de Cali in the final — their second Libertadores title — with Crespo scoring twice in the decisive leg at El Monumental.

It was a season that re-established River as the kings of South American football.
