The 1982–83 season was a frustrating one for Rangers FC under John Greig. In the Scottish Premier Division, they finished 4th, well behind champions Dundee United in a tight title race that also involved Celtic and Aberdeen. Cup competitions brought little relief: Rangers lost the Scottish League Cup final to Celtic after extra time and were beaten in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals. In Europe, they were eliminated in the UEFA Cup second round by Cologne. Despite experienced players like Ally Dawson, John MacDonald, and Derek Johnstone, the squad struggled for consistency, and the season added pressure on Greig’s management.
