In 1998, Italy, managed by Cesare Maldini, competed at the FIFA World Cup in France with a squad featuring stars like Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Del Piero, Roberto Baggio, and Gianluca Pagliuca. Italy advanced from a tough group, finishing second behind Chile after draws with Chile and Cameroon and a win over Austria. In the knockout stage, they defeated Norway 1–0 in the round of 16 but were eliminated in the quarter-finals after a 0–0 draw with France, losing 4–3 on penalties.
