In 1986/87, Arsenal finished 4th in the First Division, showing attacking promise but inconsistent form. The following season, 1987/88, saw improvement, finishing 6th, with Graham laying the groundwork for the team that would win the league in 1988/89. This period was crucial for developing Graham’s philosophy of tactical discipline, defensive organisation, and counter-attacking efficiency, forming the backbone of late-1980s Arsenal success.
